International Women’s Day (IWD) is all about raising your voice and taking action to promote women’s rights around the globe and put an end to discrimination and bias. Indeed, the theme for 2022’s IWD, which takes play on 8th March, is #BreakTheBias.
Time for Some Self-love
It’s all too easy to feel ground down by life these days, and when you’re not feeling great in yourself, you’re not in the best position to help anyone. As such, it’s important to do what you can to celebrate and care for yourself.
Self-love takes all manner of forms, of course. There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to taking better care of yourself. But if you’re wondering where to start, read on for some thoughts on using hair love as a good foundation for putting yourself first.
Why is Hair Love so Important?
According to research by All Things Hair, 20% of people feel that they have been judged or discriminated against because of their hair color. Another 16% report feeling judged because of their hair type, while a further 15% flag up their hairstyle. And another 16% of people have felt discriminated against due to a combination of all three factors. That means that just 33% of the survey’s respondents have never felt discriminated against due to their hair.
Hair is an emotive issue, with strong cultural connotations. It can also impact the way we feel every single time we look in the mirror. As such, hair love is the ideal starting point when it comes to upping your self-love game.
Showing Your Hair you Care
When it comes to taking some time out to care for your hair, a trip to the salon is an ideal starting point. We’re not talking a quick trim here but a nice, long appointment enjoying whatever luxurious treatments your local salon has on the menu to restore and nurture your tresses. If your hairdresser provides head massages as well as conditioning treatments, so much the better. And with your hair in tiptop condition, you are free to opt for a restyle that will leave you brimming with confidence, whether that’s a change of color, a dramatic cut or anything else.
If your budget won’t stretch to an afternoon spent luxuriating in the salon, don’t worry. There are plenty of decent nourishing masks and other haircare products that you can invest in for an at-home pampering session. And with so many different dyes on the market, you can also achieve a whole new look at home with relative ease. Just be sure to follow the instructions to the letter!
It’s important to show your hair some love on an ongoing basis as well. That means weekly conditioning masks, taking regular breaks from heat styling and, of course, regular trims. Simple actions, certainly, but they combine to make a surprising difference to the condition of your hair – and can mean that you feel better about yourself on a daily basis. And when you feel better about yourself, you’re in a stronger position to go out into the world and make a difference.
